Logs, alarms, registers, timing, setpoints and the actual response of equipment.
Isolate the interface
Remote/local modes, start/stop logic, interlocks, command priorities and communication links.
Verify the hypothesis
A controlled test or measurement that confirms or disproves the suspected root cause.
Correct and retest
Recommended configuration, logic or interface changes followed by verification of the result.

Can troubleshooting be done remotely?
Part of the analysis can. If measurements, live intervention or functional testing are required, the on-site scope is agreed in advance.
